Emperor of Ethiopia and latterly Rastafarian Messiah. Following his installation as king in 1928, Haile Selassie introduced changes in Ethiopia, including the abolition of slavery. His lengthy reign was interrupted in the 1930s by Mussolini’s invasion in the 1930s which Selassie's direct appeal to the League of Nations failed to address. Following his return he was respected at home and abroad, becoming associated with the cause of Pan-Africanism. His status was recognised by the dominant Coptic Orthodox Church, but it was the emergent Rastafarian religious movement which attributed divine status to him. In his later years political opponents criticised his limited engagement with social welfare – hence his wretched death and burial.
