From Eastern European Chasidic background, resettling in USA, via the UK, following Nazi deportation from Germany, Heschel in writing and teaching became a leading authority on social ethics and what it means to be Jewish. He stressed the importance of human engagement with contemporary challenges – civil rights, military initiatives, different religions – as a leap of action with God.

A ‘founding father’ of social anthropology, as characterised by intensive periods of participant observation and ethnographic recording. Much of his own field experience was in the Trobriand Islands in Australasia and in Mexico. On this he based his claim that social and cultural life takes its institutional form from meeting basic psychological needs as much as bodily ones. Reciprocity is a recurrent feature.
