ACHEBE. Chinua
1930 - 2013
Nigeria
LITERATURE

Widely esteemed novelist. Drawing on his Igbo tribal background and experience of British colonial and Christian missionary presence, his stories bring to life the tensions and the joys of living in an African context. This is more effectively communicated to non-African readers than perhaps had previously been achieved. The moral challenges of conflicting beliefs and cultures provide a mirror for comparison which is illuminating for someone in a different setting rather than distracting.
