Historical Who is Who
1857 - 1928
Emeline Pankhurst was a leading figure in the movement to promote women’s right to vote and equality generally. Initially working in collaboration with her husband who shared her views, then after his death on her own. Her militancy was expressed in demonstrations and hunger strikes. They provoked social disdain, but that became more difficult to sustain following women’s extensive involvement as part of the national efforts in World War 1. She showed the courage of her convictions with great consistency.
