Italian born Christian who lived most of his life in India as a Jesuit missionary who lived in the garb of a Hindu brahmin teacher, equally at home in Tamil and Sanskrit. Though temporarily challenged by fellow Portuguese missionaries in Goa his distinctive interpretation of the gospel was approved in Rome, he consistently embraced Hindu theological categories and achieved extensive recognition amongst a wide range of Indian people of all castes.
