1892 - 1984


A Lutheran pastor who was a U-boat captain in World War 1 and 1961-8 a president of the World Council of Churches. In disassociating himself from National Socialism and joining its ‘Confessing Church’ opposition he became vulnerable to Nazi arrest and concentration camp confinement until the end of the war. He was a lifelong pacifist, though resisting evil in a non-violent way.
