Christian social ethicist who challenged the liberal inclinations of some fellow theologians. Like any easy optimism of wider public opinion, he found this to be groundless in the daylight of global warfare and individual human capacity blithely to pursue self-interest. Instead he asked for realism in any credible faith or political programme. Whilst recognising the attractions of a pacifist stance, he found it wanting as a response to the complexities of power.
