His main academic base was at Cambridge University, but alongside these were periods of time serving as British Ambassador in China and as UNESCO’s Director of Natural Science. He was a prolific author including his 12 volume study of Science and Civilisation in China and such monographs as the History of Acupuncture. As a grounded exponent of the desirability of mutual understanding between peoples he excels.
