Abul Ala Maududi also known as Maulana who through his prolific and much translated writings became a leading political exponent of Islam, perhaps even more influential beyond Pakistan where he founded Jamaat-al-Islam in 1941. The clarity of his exposition conveys the impression that his version of Muslim teachings is the whole truth and nothing but the truth – and to question it is to question the authority of the Qur’an. From the perspectives of other Muslims, including the Barelvi and Deobandi scholars and the entire Sufi tradition, his stance is both questionable and misleading. Similarly many Non-Muslim religious believers regard his exclusivist theological reasoning as both morally and theologically presumptuous.
