Historical Who is Who
1275 - 1342
Marsilius of Padua was a philosopher and political theorist whose understanding of the Christian faith challenged the authority of the established Catholic Church. It was the God-given responsibility of the secular state to serve and order the needs of the people. The Church’s role should be focussed instead on teaching and liturgical celebration. He was excommunicated by Pope John XX11 but continued he writings in pursuit of peace.
