Historical Who is Who

LESSING, Gotthold Ephraim

1729 - 1781

Advocate of previously under-rated authors and in his own right a prolific playwright and essayist. Drama was for him a fundamental vehicle for exploring and expounding major moral and religious controversies and themes. In Nathan the Wise he sets out an imaginative resolution to the individual claims and counterclaims to truth as made by Jews, Christians and Muslims.
