Historical Who is Who

LEE, Ann

1736 - 1784
England United States

Founding enthusiast for the creation of the Shaker Church in North America. Ann first became a Shaking Quaker in Manchester (UK) in her early twenties; she had no formal education starting work at the age of 8, with her father a blacksmith and in the nearby cotton mills. Whilst in gaol for disturbing the peace with her public testimony regarding the imminent return of Christ, she had such a direct experience of his presence that this inspired all her future activities. She persuaded others to celebrate a new of life characterised by sexual equality and celibacy, communal prayer and dance, and craftsmanship of beautiful simplicity. And the moral of this story?
