Historical Who is Who

KINSEY, Alfred

1894 - 1956
United States

From an academic background in Zoology, he established the Institute for Sex Research in 1942 at the University of Indiana. Though controversial because of its subject matter and some of its methods, there is no doubt that he and his fellow workers provided much needed empirical data on the diversity of both male and female sexual experience and behaviour. These are informative for morality regarding sex, but not necessarily in themselves sufficient in determining any prescriptive oughts, except perhaps the need to avoid rigid assumptions.
