POLITICS
From a background in teaching, he founded the Zambian African National Congress, led the negotiations for Zambian independence (1964), and from his position as the country’s first President served also as Chair of the Organisation of African Unity. Critics remark on the early brutality of his government’s treatment of the Lumba people, the ‘one party’ version of his ‘Zambian Humanism’ and ‘African Socialism’, and his reluctance to quit office.
No-one can deny the dramatic shift to universal education at the outset of his presidency.
