Historical Who is Who

KAPLAN, Mordecai

1881 - 1983
United States

Founder of Reconstructionist movement in Judaism which gave renewed impetus to Jewish community life. He highlighted the notion of Jewish civilisation with inherited characteristics which need renewal in the modern world. Amongst these is the long established Bar Mitzvah for boys and he complemented this by introducing the notion of Bat Mitzvah for girls. His views aroused strong sympathies for and against; for some he had to be ‘excommuiicated’.
