Historical Who is Who

FERRAR, Nicholas

1592 - 1637

Founder of a utopian community, comprising his extended family and inspired by Anglican religious beliefs and mystical sense. His background included association with the London base of the Virginia Company; the relocation to a rural setting was supported by farming activity and bookbinding – it was also plague-free and largely unaffected by civil war conflict. George Herbert sought his help with the publication of his poems – an invaluable service. T S Eliot memorialised the community; Robert van der Meyer sought its re-establishment in the late 1970s and it continued until 1997.
