SOCIAL SCIENCE

Leading exponent of children’s psycho-social development. He had a German Jewish background, and in 1933 relocated to N. America where he held a series of leading university and medical research positions. Drawing on his own training in psychoanalysis and Montessori educational theory and on his subsequent working experience with Sioux Indian families, with war-stressed American soldiers, and with disturbed children and adolescents, he developed a stage theory which takes account of both psychological factors and social contexts. He also applied his interpretative theories to the Young Man Luther and to Mahatma Gandhi.
