Historical Who is Who
1819 - 1880
Pen-name of Marian Evans, best known as a novelist bringing to life the daily world of farming and business as a backdrop to the subtle complexities and depth of relationships. She was not shy of tackling assumptions of a male dominated publishing world, nor current marital conventions. In her translations from German of Strauss’ Life of Christ and Ludwig Feuerbach’s Essence of Christianity she produced a highly readable and very telling critique of theological beliefs as necessary for morality.
