Historical Who is Who

CHURCHILL, Winston

1874 - 1965
England
POLITICS, LITERATURE

A central figure in 20th century British, European and global politics, principally because of his role in World War 2 which was both pragmatic and strategic. From a family background in landed aristocracy, he proved his worth in military service, journalism, constituency representation, munitions commissioner, ministerial office, international statesmanship, speech-maker, multi-volume author, painter and bricklaying. He was an extraordinary patriot, but within that motivation lies a highly questionable imperialism based on white British superiority. Under close scrutiny exemplary individuals can emerge as morally ambiguous and seriously flawed.
