Historical Who is Who

CADBURY George

1839 - 1922
England
RELIGION

He took on the family tradition of Quaker conviction and chocolate making. Chocolate had to be with minimum fat and tasty to sell well and it did. Those working on its production deserved to be treated as equals, with good working conditions and housing - and this was achieved by the creation of Bournville in a countryside setting out from the centre of Birmingham. He exemplifies wealth generation as an unintended consequence of seeing work as the arena for worship; that inheritance continues to fund charitable initiatives.
