Along with her two sisters Anne and Emily, the most published of a distinctive family living in the north of England. Their poems and her novels are revelatory of the interplay of affections, infatuations and expectations in the midst of current social constraints, including church related ones. Villette is a semi-autobiographical reflection of her own frustrated love experiences as a young teacher in Brussels.Their brother’s addictive degeneration becomes the subject of an exploration of moral confusion and madness in The Professor.
