Moscow born but living in USA since childhood and mainly based at Cornell. Responsible for a distinctive notion of the Ecology of Human Development in which the psychology of the individual child in a family setting is understood as shaped by the larger contexts of family, society economics and culture. In his Two Worlds of Childhood he contrasts the shaping effects of growing up in the different cultural contexts of the USA and USSR. He had a significant role in the building of the Headstart Programme.
