Historical Who is Who

BESANT, Annie

1847 - 1933
England + India
POLITICS, RELIGION

Probably now most associated with the emergence of Theosophy, Annie Besant deserves to be linked with other causes as well. Amongst these were her espousal of atheistic beliefs – elected vice-president of the National Secular Society - and subsequent campaigning for workers’ rights and for birth control. She was branded as immoral by the social and political establishment. In relocating to India she became active in the movement for political independence – for 5 years president of the Indian National Congress.
