Historical Who is Who

BELL George K.A.

1883 - 1958

Church of England Bishop remarkable for his integration of Christian faith with contemporary social and political ethics. He was attentive to priorities within the life of the church, but equally to those of the church in the world. Music and drama mattered to him in both regards. So did ecumenical understanding between the churches for their own benefit, but also as contributory to the cause of peace in place of war. This was evident during WW1 and WW2, and during the decades between and since; it was there in his working for the creation of the World Council of Churches and also the League of Nations. In speaking against the carpet bombing of German cities he aroused the wrath of Winston Churchill.
