Berlin Rabbi, then army chaplain during WW1. From 1933 political leader of German Jewry, refusing to leave till deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp for 3 years till 1945. Resettled in London - chair of World Union of Progressive Judaism. Wrote extensively, propounding morality as the core of being Jewish - active response to divine commands.
