Buddhist notion of community, originating from 6th century BCE practice of historical figure of Gautama. The model is one of mutual service between his followers (monks and nuns) within and the wider lay community without. Life in the new community is designed to assist the overcoming of selfish individuality. Internally the emphasis is on contemplation in pursuit of enlightenment; externally through teaching and appropriate political activities on meeting the needs of society more generally.
