Lun Yu

commonly translated as Analects - a near contemporary compilation of conversations between Confucius and his disciples. It is a fundamental reference point in the Confucian tradition and has been widely influential beyond China. The teachings emphasise the importance of general benevolence (ren) and of family deference and ritual observance for the individual and for the order of society as a whole (see Li). Confucius' own style as teacher is more one of encouraging the asking of questions than didactic instruction
