inhibition

a deeply felt emotional block which prevents someone from saying or doing certain things. Viewed positively, whether the result of evolutionary adaptation or of socialization, it facilitates cooperation and peaceful stability in social interaction. On the other hand, being so strong that, like blushing, it is not easily within the person's control, it is open to the charge of being irrational, and on occasion it may be seen and/or experienced as over-sensitive and a negative condition from which it is desirable to seek release. By contrast, the state of 'lacking all inhibitions' may entail gross insensitivity.
