Four Noble Truths

the nature of reality as set out in the teaching of the Buddha. 1. Physical and mental suffering (dukkha) is a central part of human life. 2. Much of this suffering is caused by craving (tanha) which is self-defeating because of its investment in the transient features of life. 3. Suffering can be diminished or ended if craving is stopped. 4. There is a practical means of achieving this - the Eightfold Path. See too Buddhist Ethics.
