Digest of terms

an individual whose life is considered to be worthy of imitation. Christians recognise this by the term 'saint' and in the Roman Catholic tradition there are clearly specified pre-requisites and a formal process of ratification. More generally, imitation of others is a common feature of human behaviour and moral esteem is a widely used category, irrespective of any necessary religious convictions. The term exemplar may be used equally of living or historical individuals as of fictional characters. Extensive research has been carried out by Lawrence Walker and others on the significance of exemplars for moral education.
