Digest of terms

crime

technically, an act which is against the criminal law, but sometimes used more loosely to refer to serious wrongdoing. Since criminal law is subject to change, and to variation across different legal systems, what counts as a crime is subject both to variation and controversy, influenced both by traditional religious and secular values, and by changing perceptions of what is truly immoral (censorship, liberty-limiting principles).
