circle time

this refers to a mainly school based activity which takes the form of sitting round in a circle (sometimes on chairs, often on a carpeted floor or with cushions). There is agreement regarding procedural rules - eg always listening when another is speaking, not shouting or being rude. Items of special interest are shared - story, picture, object - identified and discussed. Issues are debated. Whilst circle time may be simply a 'taken-for-granted' routine at the end of a day or week, it may also be consciously promoted as part of a programme of Philosophy for Children, or seen as deliberately doing moral education.
