anxiety

sense of uncertainty, experienced both individually and collectively, in differing degrees of intensity. It may become crippling through its neurotic accompaniments. Feeling deeply insecure can be both destructive and terrifying. Anxiety can also bring to consciousness such possibilities as there are to change things. Anxiety can reveal and advertise the everyday human ingredient of courage, and with it the capacity both to respond and to find a sense of responsibility. Companionship, including that of prayer and meditation, is often a source for this encouragement. The German word for anxiety, Angst, has been adopted into English in the context of Existentialist ethics.
