alienation

term used by Marx to characterise the condition in which human beings find themselves as a result of capitalist economic forces. They are reduced to little more than tools of the market and with no freedom to be truly themselves. Ethically speaking, they are profoundly demoralised. Whether in this Marxist sense, or generalised to refer to humanity as missing some essential ingredient, there is an affirmation that true humanity might yet be sought and found by transformative initiatives.
